Privacy Policy

This policy is a first draft based on standard e-commerce templates and has not yet been reviewed by counsel.

Personal information we collect

This Privacy Policy describes how Tobi collects, uses and shares your personal information when you visit tobi.com, buy a Tobi collar, or use the Tobi membership app (together, the Site and the Service).

Broadly, we collect three kinds of information:

  • Device information — automatically collected when you browse the Site.
  • Order information — collected when you place an order.
  • Account and collar information — collected when you set up a Tobi collar and use the app.

Device information

When you visit the Site, we automatically collect information about your device, including your web browser, IP address, time zone and some of the cookies installed on your device. As you browse, we also collect information about the pages and products you view, the websites or search terms that referred you to the Site, and how you interact with the Site.

We collect this using cookies, log files, web beacons, tags and pixels. You can set your browser to refuse cookies, though parts of the Site may not work correctly if you do.

Order information

When you place an order, we collect your name, billing address, shipping address, payment details (including card or wallet information), email address and phone number. We use this information to fulfil orders, arrange shipping, send order confirmations, screen for fraud and — where you have asked for it — send you marketing.

Card details are handled by our payment processor; we do not store full card numbers on our own systems.

Collar, app and location information

Tobi is a GPS collar, so using the Service necessarily involves data about where a dog is and what it is doing. When you activate a collar and use the membership app we collect:

  • Location data reported by the collar — GPS coordinates and location history, together with the timestamps and accuracy needed to show them on a map.
  • Activity and rest data recorded by the collar’s sensors, such as steps, movement and periods of rest.
  • Safe zones you draw in the app. A safe zone describes a real place, usually your home, so we treat it as sensitive location information.
  • Account and pet profile details: your name, email, password, and your dog’s name, breed, age and weight.
  • Connectivity and diagnostics from the collar and the app — battery level, signal strength, firmware version, crash logs and app performance data.

How we use your personal information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide the Service — show your dog’s live location and location history, send safe-zone and battery alerts, and display activity and rest trends in the app.
  • Fulfil orders: process payments, ship products, provide invoices and order confirmations.
  • Provide customer support and diagnose problems with a collar, an account or a membership.
  • Maintain and improve the Service, including improving location accuracy, battery life and alert reliability. Where we analyse collar data for product improvement we use aggregated or de-identified data wherever it will do the job.
  • Screen orders for fraud or risk, and comply with legal obligations.
  • Send you marketing about Tobi products and membership, when that is consistent with the preferences you have shared with us. You can opt out of marketing at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us.

Activity and rest data is a wellness feature. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose anything, and we do not use it to make decisions about you.

Sharing your personal information

We share personal information with service providers who help us run Tobi, and only so far as they need it to do that work:

  • Hosting and infrastructure — to store account, order and collar data.
  • Cellular network providers — to deliver the connectivity a collar uses to report its position.
  • Mapping providers — to render locations and safe zones on a map.
  • Payment processors — to take payment and manage membership billing.
  • Shipping and fulfilment partners — to deliver your order.
  • Analytics and email providers — to understand how the Site is used and to send transactional and marketing email.

We do not sell your dog’s location data, and we do not share location or safe-zone data with advertisers, data brokers or insurers.

We may also disclose personal information to comply with applicable laws and regulations, or to respond to a lawful request such as a subpoena, warrant or court order. If Tobi is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.

Behavioural advertising

We use the information described above to show you advertisements we think may be relevant, on platforms such as search engines and social networks. This advertising is based on Site browsing and order information only — never on collar location, safe zones or activity data.

You can opt out of targeted advertising through the settings offered by the individual platforms, or through the Digital Advertising Alliance’s opt-out portal at optout.aboutads.info.

Do Not Track

Please note that we do not alter the Site’s data collection and use practices when we see a Do Not Track signal from your browser, because there is no common industry standard for how such signals should be honoured.

Your rights (EEA and UK)

If you are a resident of the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to ask that it be corrected, updated or erased, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You also have the right to receive a copy of your data in a portable format, and to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

We process your information to perform the contract we have with you (providing the Service and fulfilling your order), to comply with legal obligations, and on the basis of our legitimate interests in operating and improving Tobi. Where we rely on consent — for example for marketing email — you may withdraw it at any time. Please note that your information may be transferred outside Europe, including to the United States, under appropriate safeguards.

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@tobi.com.

Your rights (California)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, to request a copy of it, to request correction, and to request deletion, subject to legal exceptions. You also have the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

Tobi does not sell personal information, and does not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising in the way those terms are defined under California law. Precise geolocation is treated as sensitive personal information and is used only to provide the Service you have asked for. To make a request, email hello@tobi.com; we may need to verify your identity before we can act on it.

Data retention

We keep order information for as long as we need it to fulfil orders, honour warranties and meet our tax and accounting obligations.

Account, collar and pet profile data is kept for as long as your account is open. Location history is kept for a rolling period while your membership is active so that you can review where your dog has been, and is deleted on that rolling basis thereafter. If you close your account, we delete or de-identify your account, location and activity data within a reasonable period, except where we must keep records for legal reasons.

Security

We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, including encryption in transit, access controls and regular review of our systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your personal information we will notify you and the relevant regulators as required by law.

Minors

The Site and the Service are not intended for anyone under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at hello@tobi.com and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes to our practices or for operational, legal or regulatory reasons. When we make a material change we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you by email or in the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does charging work?

A mat goes under her bed. When she sleeps on it, the collar charges through the fabric. Nothing to plug into the collar, ever.

Is there a subscription?

There's a membership. It runs the map, the alerts, and the app — $9.99 a month, or less by the year. Cancel anytime; the collar keeps working as a collar.

She already has a chip. Isn't she covered?

A chip tells a scanner who she is, if someone scans it. It was never built to tell you where she is. Tobi is.

What about an AirTag?

An AirTag tells you where she was, the last time a stranger's phone happened to walk past. Tobi shows you where she is now.

What happens when I'm away from home?

Near you, your phone reads the collar directly. Away, the collar reports on its own over cellular, and the app shows her latest position.

What if someone picks her up?

A tag can be taken off, and a chip only helps if someone chooses to scan it. Tobi shows you where the collar is, not just who she belongs to.

What sizes does it come in?

Three. Small 10–16", Medium 16–24", Large 24–30". Measure snug at the neck, where a collar sits.

Does it work without cell service?

It needs a cellular signal to send her location to your phone. Up close, your phone reads the collar directly, signal or not.

Is it waterproof?

Rain, mud, and a swim.

Does it diagnose anything?

No. Tobi notices changes in activity and rest and shows them to you. Your vet decides what they mean.
